Superior vena cava syndrome caused by Behçet's disease.

Department of Radiology, Faculty of Medicine, Firat University, Elazig, Turkey Background: A-36-year-old man presented with a six-year history of Behçet’s disease and superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome. He said his symptoms related with Behçet disease (recurrent genital and oral ulcers, joint tenderness) did start 20 years ago. He has dyspnea and generalized joint tenderness. Physical examination was normal except for generalized joint tenderness. Laboratory findings were unremarkable.

Obstruction of the superior vena cava (SVC) due to any cause results in development of venous collaterals in the upper part of the esophagus, known as "downhill" varices. Although rare, bleeding can be life-threatening. Presently described is case of Behçet's diseaserelated SVC occlusion in a patient who presented with gastrointestinal bleeding from upper esophageal varices.

A patient with Behçet's disease developed the rare complications of pericarditis and, two months later, superior vena caval obstruction. The latter complication was investigated by angiography to exclude other causes.
